Do you sell
airbags?
Yes, we sell both original, factory airbags and cosmetic
replacement covers for blown airbags. The covers are non-functional
and for cosmetic purposes only - they do not go over or in
conjunction with an airbag. They replace the original cover after
it is blown, or in cases where a vehicle owner chooses to remove the
airbag. The original, factory airbags we sell are an
exact replacement for the airbag that came with your car and are an integral
part of your car's safety system.
Are airbag covers
legal?
We are not aware of any federal law requiring a blown airbag to be replaced
with an airbag. However, various state laws do vary. Please check with your
state's Department of Motor Vehicles (or appropriate agency) for more
information. Airbag covers are cosmetic devices only and do not work in
conjunction with your car's safety system like an original airbag.
Individuals or professional rebuilders with criminal intent typically use a
product that has a manufacturer logo on it and is intended to deceive the
buyer. Often those involved in scams use original, factory covers that have
been deployed and subsequently re-glued and painted. We manufacture our
covers - they are not made from deployed airbags. Additionally, our covers
have the words "No Airbag Inside" imprinted on the face. This is to ensure
there's no confusion about our covers and their purpose - that they are
cosmetic only.
Who buys
airbag covers?
Most of our customers are rebuilders and repair shops. Other
customers who use our covers include those not wanting an airbag
in their car for a personal reason (perhaps they sit very close
to the steering wheel or are elderly and feel uncomfortable
with an airbag or have had a bad experience with an airbag).
Some customers use our covers instead of an airbag on the
recommendation of their doctor after having heart or eye surgery.
Other customers include those who race their cars and those
interested in custom restorations. Hicks Airbag Covers is glad
to provide our customers with this choice in the marketplace.
What is a Safety Restraint Sytem?
The Safety Restraint System (SRS) in your car includes several components
that work together to protect the occupants in the event of a wreck. Some of
those components are the seatbelts, airbag, and pre-tensioner on the
seatbelts. Airbags are a part of the SRS and are meant to be used in
conjuction with your seatbelt as demonstrated by the Airbag Blaster. Our
airbag covers are not part of your car's SRS and are clearly labeled with
"No Airbag Inside" to avoid any confusion.
How do future
owners of this car know it has an airbag cover?
It's important that a person buying a car knows that the original factory
airbag has been replaced with an airbag cover. When you receive your order
from us, we include some items to make this easier. You'll receive a booklet
containing instructions and other information about your cover. We also
include a Waiver Form that stays with the car's paperwork such as the
registration and odometer certificate, if any. You'll keep a copy of this
for your records, too. We also include permanent stickers
for the interior
of the vehicle that caution the driver that the auto's airbag system is a
cosmetic replacement. You must provide both of these items to the owner of
your car.
Additionally, our covers are imprinted with the words "No Airbag Inside"
when we produce them to ensure that any future drivers/owners of that car
are aware that there isn't an airbag behind the cover.
Does the SRS airbag work with an installed
airbag cover?
No, an airbag cover is a cosmetic repair that restores your steering
assembly to its original appearance. An airbag cover is not a safety device
and doesn't work with your airbag. In fact, the words "No Airbag Inside" are
imprinted on the covers when they're produced so all parties are aware of
their cosmetic nature.
Do I need to
ship you my old airbag cover before you ship my order?
No. We use undamaged airbags to make our molds - no airbag
or cover is required from you.
Will my airbag
cover look the same as the original one in my car?
Not exactly. Our covers don't have your car's logo or any labeling about SRS
on them. Additionally, our covers are imprinted at the time of production
with the words "No Airbag Inside" so that all drivers owners know that there
is no airbag with the cover. Each cover is made from a mold of the original
undamaged cover in a plastic that looks and feels very similar to the
factory original. However, to comply with federal trademark laws, there are
no trademarks or logos on our molds.
Can I order my
cover in any color?
Yes, just choose
a color from our existing selection and for an additonal
$10 we will paint your cover.
What are your
covers made of?
All covers are made of a durable polymer compound that is
very similar in texture to the original airbag cover.
Will my horn work with my replacement
airbag cover?
If your original cover contained your horn circuitry, so
will your replacement. Instructions for connecting your
horn are included with your order.
How much will my covers cost me?
Our airbag replacement covers range from $75 - $85.
